Why see an SLP for brain/cognitive health testing? SLPs/Speech therapists receive extensive training to understand the complex cognitive-communication functions of the brain. SLPs are trained to diagnose and treat Acquired Cognitive-Communication Disorders (ACCD). SLPs have a deep understanding of the impact that reduced cognitive skills, such as attention, processing speed, and memory, can have on communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, conversing socially, and listening. An SLP can help to improve cognitive-communication problems related to brain-based injuries, brain conditions, or brain diseases; for instance, stroke, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI/concussion) or moderate-severe TBI, ADHD, Autism/ASD, dementia, ALS, Parkinson's disease, brain tumor, "long covid" effects, and more.

There are various reasons to complete brain/cognitive health testing. For some, it may be a preventative measure so they can track small changes over time and know where to focus their brain training efforts, such as clients with ADHD, Autism, or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

For others, they recognize the importance of completing a brain health assessment before starting contact sports (as a part of their 'baseline testing') so they can have personalized, clear data about their cognitive skills before a concussion occurs. This way, they can be aware of red flags to seek out the earliest treatment possible, focus their concussion/TBI therapy for better, faster outcomes, and feel a sense of hope when they see objective improvements in cognitive skills over time. 

For many others, for example, individuals who struggle with memory and concentration issues after chemotherapy treatments, cognitive/brain health testing helps to pinpoint areas of need and capitalize on strengths so clients can remove the guesswork and conserve their precious time and energy to maximize recovery.
